The CHANEL Sublimage facial is the winter skin reset I didn’t know I needed
Whether you’re looking for a seasonal skin reset, a solo indulgence or a thoughtful Father’s Day gift for the special man in your man in your life who deserves a little pampering but would never book it themselves, this is an experience that manages to feel both luxurious and genuinely restorative.
If summer skin is a song played at full volume, winter skin is the acoustic version. The notes are all there, but somehow the bass has dropped. By June, my skin tends to mirror the season, but not in any dramatic sense. There are no breakouts to battle or concerns demanding serious intervention. Rather, my complexion can lose some of its radiance and reflect a few stress factors around my eye area.
Which raises a question: how much of what we describe as “bad skin” is actually just tired skin?
This is a realisation I had not yet been starkly aware of this winter until CHANEL came to the rescue. Earlier this week, I visited the CHANEL Boutique at the V&A Waterfront for a personalised skincare treatment. The V&A Waterfront is many things, but tranquil is not usually one of them.
On the day of my CHANEL Sublimage facial, it was performing its familiar choreography: tourists musing on new surroundings, coffee machines hissing, and sweet perfumes on offer for passersby to test. Yet perhaps that’s what makes the treatment room tucked inside the CHANEL Boutique feel so remarkable with its immediate reprieve from hustling and bustling.
The CHANEL Sublimage facial begins by exploring that idea. Before a cleanser even makes contact with your face, there is breathwork. While my therapist guided me through a series of slow breathing exercises, she gently massaged my shoulders and arms before stretching my feet. It felt less like the beginning of a facial and more like the opening scene of a good holiday.
CHANEL skincare is combined with LE MASSAGE DE CHANEL expertise, blending the best massage techniques of the east and west.
The tension I had been carrying all morning seemed to dissolve. We tend to think of skincare as a topical exercise — a matter of acids, serums and moisturisers — yet stress has a way of settling into the face too. It lingers around the eyes, settles into the jawline and somehow manages to make even well-rested skin look slightly depleted.
Only once I had properly relaxed did the treatment move into its first skincare step.
A thorough cleanse removed the light layer of foundation I had arrived wearing, followed by a second cleanse that left my skin feeling comfortable rather than stripped. The pace throughout was deliberate. Nothing felt rushed or transactional. Instead, every step seemed to build naturally upon the last.
The next stage was a gentle AHA peel, and this is where the treatment begins to address one of winter skin’s most common complaints: dullness.
Alpha hydroxy acids work by loosening the bonds that hold dead skin cells together on the surface of the skin, allowing them to shed more effectively. The easiest analogy is a camera lens. The image itself hasn’t changed, but once the smudges are removed everything appears clearer, brighter and more defined. My skin didn’t suddenly become different; it simply looked more like itself (but even better).

Following the peel, a warm facial steamer enveloped my face, helping to soften and prepare the pores before the application of the Sublimage products. The sensation was deeply comforting.

At the heart of the treatment is CHANEL’s Sublimage range, the maison’s most luxurious skincare collection. The products are formulated around polyfractioned Vanilla Planifolia, a rare vanilla species that CHANEL has researched extensively for its revitalising properties. Throughout the facial, a sequence of Sublimage products was layered into the skin, including hydrating lotions, concentrated serums, eye treatments and nourishing creams. The formulas are rich without being heavy, nourishing without becoming greasy and lush to the touch.
The treatment incorporates LE MASSAGE DE CHANEL, a series of techniques that blend Eastern and Western massage philosophies. Using sculpting, lifting and pinch-roll movements, my therapist worked across the face, neck and décolletage with remarkable precision.
Through massage, circulation is stimulated, the skin is re-oxygenated and the effects of the products are amplified. The treatment notes describe the result as skin that appears smoother, firmer and more radiant, and by the end of the facial I was ready for a new layer of foundation – courtesy of CHANEL Les Beiges.
The truth is that the CHANEL Sublimage facial delivers more than visible skincare benefits. Yes, the full treatment leaves the complexion looking fresher and more radiant. But what lingers afterwards is the feeling of having stepped away from the relentless pace of everyday life for a moment.
And perhaps that’s why it feels particularly suited to this time of year.
Winter has a habit of convincing us that restoration is something we should postpone until a holiday arrives. The Sublimage facial is a reminder that it can happen on an ordinary weekday instead.
