This R250 serum will change how you think about oily skin
K-beauty has spent decades perfecting hydration, and this Korean-formulated, South African-loved serum proves those formulas translate surprisingly well to local skin.
For a long time, I thought the cause of oily skin was simply an overproduction of the skin’s sebum. Although this may be true in some cases, I learnt in my twenties that oiliness can also be the result of dehydrated skin. Not to be confused with dry skin, dehydrated skin often leaves your complexion looking dull, feeling tight and developing an uneven texture, while simultaneously producing even more oil as it tries to compensate for the lack of moisture.
It may seem counterintuitive, but it’s much like drinking more water after a long run. When your body loses moisture, it naturally tries to restore balance, and your skin isn’t all that different. When it’s dehydrated, it can produce more oil to compensate for what it’s missing.
Of course, harsh winter weather isn’t the only culprit. Long days spent in air conditioning, over-cleansing, over-exfoliating, hormonal changes and everyday environmental stressors can all leave skin dehydrated without you even realising it. In short, oily skin is a skin type, while dehydration is a skincare concern that can affect anyone.
Luckily, the right hydrating ingredients can quench your skin’s thirst, and once I understood the difference, my entire approach to skincare changed. Instead of trying to strip away oil, I started focusing on replenishing moisture and supporting my skin barrier, and the difference was far more noticeable than I’d expected.

I’ve used a wide array of serums containing hyaluronic acid and niacinamide over the years, but I’ve eventually settled on Swiitch Beauty’s #WaterGel Plumping + Hydrating Serum. Although Swiitch is a South African beauty brand, much of its skincare is formulated and manufactured in South Korea, where K-beauty has earned its reputation for thoughtful, ingredient-led formulations that prioritise hydration, barrier health and long-term skin resilience over quick fixes. Rather than chasing overnight results, the philosophy is centred on helping skin function at its best, which is exactly what drew me to this serum in the first place.
The #WaterGel Hydrating Serum combines niacinamide, rose water, shea butter and moisture-locking ceramides, creating a formula that feels nourishing without ever becoming heavy. It glides effortlessly across the skin, absorbs quickly and leaves behind a smooth, hydrated finish that wears beautifully under sunscreen and foundation, to the point that I’ve often skipped primer altogether. It’s become a staple in my routine and, at just R250, delivers the kind of hydration and skin-barrier support I’d happily expect from a serum at twice the price.

As with any skincare product, consistency is key, and it’s worth remembering that meaningful results generally take around four weeks to appear as your skin completes its natural renewal cycle. Over time, my complexion looks brighter (not to be confused with lighter) and more balanced, and I still get a slight midday shine, but it’s more glazed donut, less koeksister.

Ultimately, rather than masking or mattifying oily skin, #WaterGel addresses what causes it in the first place, and that’s precisely why the rave reviews speak for themselves.
The #WaterGel hydrating + plumping serum is available online at swiitchbeauty.com, online and in-store on Beauty on TApp, exclusively in-store at selected EGG Beauty department stores, and at dedicated Swiitch Beauty counters at select Edgars stores.
