How I turned my home into 4 different destinations this winter

As dopamine décor continues to embrace interiors that spark joy through colour, texture and personality, fragrance has become the invisible finishing touch. These four luxury candles create distinct moods for different spaces, inviting you to curate a home that feels as transportive as your favourite destination.

The best hotels understand that luxury isn’t only something you see. It’s something you inhale the moment the door opens.

That same thinking has found its way into our homes. As dopamine décor continues to evolve, interiors are becoming more personal, more playful and more emotionally led. Paint colours lift our mood, tactile fabrics invite us to slow down, while fragrance transforms the experience of a room in ways furniture can’t.

But rather than choosing one signature scent for the entire house, have you ever considered giving each space its own destination? The Woolworths Haute Series has recently made that possible for me, with home fragrances that feel layered, easy on the senses and make a house a home. Available as candles, diffusers and room sprays, the collection is designed to be mixed throughout the home, allowing every room to tell a different story.

As someone with a penchant for a good scent – whether it be perfume to complete an outfit or incense to cleanse the air and aura in my home – I’ve had the pleasure of lighting the Haute Series scented jar candles in different spaces in my apartment. At first, I lit them all the lounge (the most central part of the home) to gauge the strength of each one. And then I let my nose travel and subsequently, the candles too.

White Sandalwood | The main bedroom

Bedrooms should feel like sanctuaries, and White Sandalwood delivers exactly that. This candle does a good job of adding an instant air of luxury, before settling into the background without overwhelming the atmosphere. The overall effect is reminiscent of a wellness retreat, where natural materials, crisp white linen and warm sunsets are the order of the day.

Base: Ambery, Musky, Sandalwood

Black Forest | The lounge

The lounge is the space that captures my taste and personality most accurately. Between the vinyl player, magazine stacks and lived-in corduroy Vetsak beanbag, it’s where my apartment comes alive. It therefore makes sense for the strongest candle to become its signature scent. The first thing I noticed was its freshness — lavender and cedarwood giving way to earthy patchouli — before it settled into something that felt grounding and luxurious. It has the atmosphere of a dreamy lodge surrounded by evergreen forests, making the lounge feel warm and grounded for winter evenings spent binge watching your favourite series.

Base: Patchouli Leaf

Majestic Garden | The entrance hallway

The entrance hall sets the tone for the rest of the home, so it makes sense to choose a home fragrance that feels welcoming without overwhelming the senses. Majestic Garden opens with fruity pear and blackcurrant before florals and patchouli add warmth and depth. Of the four candles, it’s the lightest, but that’s precisely what makes it so well suited to a transitional area where you move from one space to the next. Rather than lingering heavily, it offers a gentle burst of fragrance as you walk through, creating a subtle first impression that feels fresh and inviting. If you prefer understated scents that complement rather than command a room, this is the candle to place closest to your front door.

Oceanic Serenity | The bathroom

Bathrooms naturally lend themselves to fragrance, but finding one that feels fresh without becoming clinical isn’t always easy. Oceanic Serenity strikes that balance well. The scent is light and aquatic, creating a clean atmosphere effortlessly. It fills the room gradually, making it ideal for everyday use rather than special occasions. It’s the candle I light just before my evening shower, adding a calming aroma to the space. If your preference leans towards crisp, understated fragrances over sweeter florals, this is an easy addition to your bathroom.

Top: Orange, Eucalyptus, Sea Salt

Middle: Violet, Lavendar

Base: Camphor, Woody, Spicy

The verdict:

At R279 per 195g candle, the Woolworths Haute Series candles offer excellent value, with fragrances that feel layered and far more luxurious than their price suggests. They burn evenly and continue to leave a subtle fragrance in the room shortly after the flame has been extinguished. Black Forest is the clear standout, with the strongest scent throw of the collection. Despite its name, it leans surprisingly feminine, combining aromatic lavender, soft vanilla and earthy patchouli into a fragrance that’s both just the right amount of sweet and inviting. Majestic Garden, despite its bright floral name, is the most understated of the four. Its scent is pleasant, but noticeably lighter and less impactful than the others. Overall, if you’re looking for affordable luxury home fragrance, this collection delivers exceptional quality and impressive longevity for the price.
