Colour-tinted sunglasses are the easiest way to tap into dopamine dressing

Can a pair of sunglasses make life look better, or just your outfit? The return of colour-tinted lenses suggests the answer is somewhere in between.

Everyone has a signature accessory of choice. For some, it’s a constellation of rings stacked on every finger; for others, shoulder-skimming earrings, a silk tie in an improbable shade or a watch worn with near-religious devotion. Mine, increasingly, is eyewear.

A good frame is less about trend and more about architecture. The right pair can sharpen cheekbones, soften a jawline or lend an air of cinematic mystery to even the most exhausted face. As someone with an oval face shape, I gravitate towards angular silhouettes: narrow rectangles, sharp cat-eyes, anything with clean lines and a bit of attitude. The point is to have sunglasses that don’t hinge on any given outfit or season but are classic enough to punctuate every look effortlessly.

But winter presents a particular eyewear dilemma. Grey skies and earlier sunsets tend to make traditional black lenses feel unnecessarily severe and almost too committed to summer glamour. Enter colour-tinted lenses: a subtle mood shifter.

As fashion continues its fascination with colour psychology, dopamine dressing and Pantone-led palettes, eyewear is following suit. Unlike statement frames, which often demand the rest of the outfit quieten down, tinted lenses can work almost like makeup, subtly enhancing features without overwhelming the face. Amber and honey tones warm the complexion and cast everything in a nostalgic, almost sepia glow, like a Slim Aarons photograph at golden hour. Yellow lenses, meanwhile, have become the insider favourite for overcast days, sharpening contrast while giving even the most minimal outfit a slightly subversive edge. Blue tints feel distinctly Y2K with a touch of sci-fi futurism, while green lenses carry a cooler, more old-school energy, as though you might spend your weekends collecting secondhand books.

My current obsession is a pair of rose-tinted Ray-Bans that make the world around me look somewhat flirtatious. I guess there’s a reason the phrase “rose-coloured glasses” has endured; optimism, it turns out, is excellent styling.

In a season dominated by sensible outerwear and practical layering, colour-tinted sunglasses offer a small but effective act of sartorial escapism. A reminder that sometimes style is less about being seen and more about how you choose to see the world.
