TASTE TEST! Lays cheddar & cranberry: It’s a yes, BUT . . .
Italian Truffle & Garlic, Argentinian Creamy Pepper Steak, Caribbean Onion & Balsamic Vinegar, Lays potato chips are known for their interesting flavours. However, if you haven’t yet come across their new Kettle Cooked range, be warned: You’re probably going to either love it or hate it.
The Kettle Cooked range is available in three flavours. The Seared Rib Eye & Mushroom, and the Sea Salt & Black Pepper are both delicious and will have wide appeal. By all means take it out of the cupboard for an evening in front of the TV or before the braai. The third flavour, however, is something more unusual: White Cheddar & Cranberry. The cranberry flavour is anything but subtle, it’s quite prominent, and when you tear open the packet, the first flavour that reaches you is something sweet.
How does it taste?
ALL THAT asked 12 students to blind-test the chips, describe the taste, and say whether they would buy it or not. And the result was about 50-50. Nobody could immediately place the taste, with some guessing “toffee-apple”, “candy floss”, “onion”, “apricot jam” or “chutney”. Of the twelve, however, seven said they would buy the chips.
Among the five who wouldn’t buy it, one person’s comment perhaps summed it up best: “I expect a savoury taste when I eat chips. If I wanted to eat something sweet, I would have bought sweets.”
ALL THAT reckons Lays White Cheddar & Cranberry is at least interesting enough that you should buy and taste it once.
