Sneaker of the Week: You either get the Puma Speedcat or you don’t
The Puma Speedcat is splitting sneakerheads down the middle, with some embracing its nostalgic Formula 1 roots while others can’t get behind its ultra-slim silhouette. So, is it worth the hype?
If the Samba has taught us anything, it’s that the best sneakers rarely stay in their original lane. The Puma Speedcat, which first arrived in 1999 as a driving shoe for Formula 1, is the latest silhouette to prove that performance heritage often finds its second life on the street.

While this year’s World Cup has reignited football culture both on and off the pitch, fashion has also widened its sporting gaze. Football shirts are still firmly in rotation, yet motorsport has become the season’s other great influence, with racing jackets, technical fabrics and streamlined sneakers replacing the chunky silhouettes that dominated wardrobes only a few years ago. The Speedcat captures that shift perfectly because it borrows from racing without feeling like a costume.

Part of its appeal is that it’s designed to be an everyday shoe rather than a one-and-done statement. The slim profile, soft suede upper and low rubber sole give it a sharpness that works just as well with tailored trousers as it does with loose denim or track pants, while the signature T-toe keeps the design instantly recognisable. It’s the kind of sneaker that effortlessly elevates any outfit, which perhaps explains why it has found favour with everyone from real Formula 1 fans to fashion hypebeasts.

Unlike many trend-driven releases, the Speedcat also has genuine staying power. It feels nostalgic without relying on nostalgia alone, and although the resurgence of low-profile sneakers has certainly helped its return, the design is strong enough to outlast the current obsession with slim silhouettes. If you’re looking to move beyond terrace classics without sacrificing versatility, this is one of the most convincing options on the market.
